Understanding Dry Eye Syndrome

Dry Eye Syndrome can present in various forms, and its causes can differ widely. Most individuals affected by this condition experience insufficient tear production and an inadequate oil component in their tears, resulting in rapid tear evaporation. Consequently, the cornea may become dry, damaged and inflamed, increasing the risk of infection and irritation.
Symptoms of dry eye include watery eyes, burning, stinging, itchiness, redness, and persistent discomfort. Visual symptoms such as blurred or fluctuating vision are also very common.

While factors such as age, medical conditions, hormonal changes, menopause, and environmental influences can contribute to dry eyes, the symptoms generally appear in similar ways.

The Importance of Effective Dry Eye Treatment

At Eye Opener Optometrists in Drummoyne, our highly trained staff specialise in effective treatment for dry eye using an advanced system known as Envison, comprising of Forma-I and Lumeca-I.

While dry eye can lead to persistent discomfort, proper tear production is essential for maintaining overall eye well-being. Without a healthy tear film, eyes become increasingly vulnerable to damage and infection. That’s why early intervention is vital in avoiding more serious complications. Our team utilizes advanced technologies like Envision to enhance patient comfort, restore normal function, and help prevent the progression of issues related to dry eyes.

Trust our expertise to provide the care you need for optimal eye health by providing a personalised, custom, and comfortable treatment to set you on a path to long-term recovery and transformative results.

How our Dry Eye Treatments work

Our advanced treatment for dry eye syndrome targets both the underlying causes and symptoms effectively. We use a specialised device, Forma-I, to focus on the meibomian glands, which are essential for normal oil production. This approach allows us to treat the periorbital area and eyelids comfortably and precisely.

To enhance the surrounding eye area, a secondary device, Lumecca I, is used to improve both the physical sensations of the eye and the appearance of the skin. Our targeted treatments help reduce superficial lesions and promote skin resurfacing and tightening.

This tailored approach results in significant improvements in key symptoms of dry eye, with shorter treatment sessions that involve minimal discomfort and little to no downtime.

Forma-I

Forma-I (bipolar radiofrequency) addresses the symptoms of dry eye disease (DED) caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). Intended for use in the the periorbital area and upper and lower lids and relieves inflammation of meibomian glands and eye irritation.

Lumecca-I

Lumecca-I is an effective treatment of benign pigmented epidermal lesions and benign cutaneous vascular lesions.Lumecca was developed with an advanced xenon flash lamp producing 40% of total pulse energy in the 500-600 nm range. IPL energy penetrates the skin and is selectively absorbed by lesion chromophores (melanin or hemoglobin).

Historical Treatment for Dry Eye Syndrome

In the past, individuals diagnosed with dry eye syndrome often had to endure the condition, relying on topical treatments or invasive surgeries to manage symptoms. However, recent innovations have made treatment more accessible and comfortable, providing long-term solutions that address the root causes of dry eyes. This advanced technology uses RF technology to penetrate eyelid tissues, whether at the surface level or through microneedling.

This unique approach not only treats the underlying causes but also alleviates symptoms, significantly improving the quality of life and comfort for patients.

Current Treatment for Dry Eye Syndrome

Forma-I specifically targets the lipid-producing glands in the eye, essential for maintaining proper lubrication. This treatment helps balance oil and water in tears, reducing excessive evaporation and ensuring longer-lasting comfort for the eyes.

For the surrounding area, which can become inflamed due to a compromised tear film, Lumecca-I provides effective complementary solutions. These treatments enhance the tone and texture of the skin, promoting collagen production for tighter, rejuvenated skin around the eyes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Symptoms of Dry Eye ?
Symptoms of dry eye can include a dry, gritty, or burning sensation, along with redness and watery or teary eyes. Some individuals experience mucus that makes their eyes feel “glued shut” upon waking. Many also report a sensation of something in their eyes or eyestrain, and itching and light sensitivity may be present as well.
What is Forma-I ?
Forma-I was designed to target the symptoms of dry eye disease linked to Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). It is specifically intended for use in the periorbital area and on the upper and lower eyelids, effectively relieving inflammation of the meibomian glands and reducing eye irritation. This innovative, non-surgical procedure utilizes bipolar radio-frequency (RF) technology to reach the smaller, delicate subdermal layers. With a focus on ocular safety, the compact applicator, precise RF depth control, and intelligent temperature monitoring make it an effective non-drug alternative for those suffering from dry eye and MGD.
How does Forma-I work ?
Forma-I provides a warm, massage-like sensation in the eye area, enhancing blood circulation.

By directly targeting the periorbital region and eyelids, Forma-I helps define facial features while addressing issues like redness, burning, and itchiness. The treatment applies heat to “melt” the oils that may be clogging the glands, and the gentle movement of the applicator facilitates the expression of these oils. Manual expression is performed following the procedure for optimal results.

What is Lumecca-I ?
Lumecca is an innovative intense pulsed light (IPL) technology developed to treat pigmented and vascular lesions. Lumecca-I specifically targets rosacea, which is often associated with inflammation, while also helping to normalize the tear film. This treatment is suitable for skin types 1-3.
How does Lumecca-I work ?
Lumecca-I generates tissue heating that aids in reducing inflammation. During the treatment, you’ll experience a bright flash of light along with a sensation similar to a gentle snap from an elastic band on your skin. It’s normal to have some redness and mild warmth afterward, but these typically fade within an hour.
What can I expect ?
All treatments are conducted in the Eye Opener Optometrists Clinic, eliminating the need for general anesthesia, incisions, or downtime typically associated with surgical procedures.

Most patients report a high level of comfort during the treatments. Following treatment, the skin can be a little sensitive for a few days. As a consequence, we recommend patients avoid excessive sun exposure for this short period of time.

We will thoroughly discuss your customised treatment plan, addressing your specific condition and outlining the number of sessions required.

What kind of Post-Procedure Care is Required ?
Most patients do not experience any side effects, and any skin reactions usually resolve within a few hours. There is no recovery period or downtime associated with these procedures.
